Star-studded entry for Avontuur Fillies Guineas

Trainer Mike de Kock has entered Ataab and Pine Princess (third in last season’s Golden Slipper) as well as the brilliant Majmu for the R1-million Grade 1 Avontuur Estate Cape Fillies Guineas to be run over 1600m at Kenilworth on Saturday 6 December.

De Kock, successful with Emerald Beauty in 2003 and with Rumya two years ago, has also had four seconds during that period.

Cold As Ice, decisive winner of the Grade 2 Choice Carriers Championship over 200m less, heads the Cape entries. The Choice Carriers Championship winner has gone on to take the Cape Fillies Guineas three times in the last four seasons but Cold As Ice is not bred to get 1600m and is drawn wide. Joey Ramsden has taken the precaution of entering her for the Southern Cross Stakes on the same day.

Double Whammy, beaten 1.25 lengths in the Choice Carriers Championship, will represent Glen Kotzen, who won this race with Princess Victoria three years ago. Jet Set Go, Inara, Lucky Tuesday and Grey Light were third, fourth, fifth and sixth in the lead-up race.

Hot Affair, one of the top two-year-old fillies in Cape Town last season, had a setback that delayed her return but Mike Robinson hopes to get a race into her in the next fortnight.

Sean Tarry has entered Siren’s Call as well as last season’s Thekwini runner-up Carry On Alice.

Justin Snaith has the best recent record with four wins in the last seven seasons and he has entered Sunset Tripp, Princess Chloe and Eros’s Girl.

There is a supplementary entry stage next Monday 24 November with a final field announcement at Avontuur on Thursday week (27 November).

Mercury Sprint winner Fly By Night, who made a winning return last Sunday, is one of three Mike Bass entries for the R400,000 Grade 2 Southern Cross Stakes over 1000m at Kenilworth on Cape Fillies Guineas Day. Bass has also entered last season’s Cape Fillies Guineas runner-up Lanner Falcon, who finished fourth to stable companion Tevez in Sunday’s Cape Merchants.

De Kock’s sole entry is Alboran Sea, who ran below best when odds-on at Turffontein last Saturday. According to the stipendiary stewards’ report, she was found to have mild post-race distress.

Fairyinthewoods won last season’s race and is on the way back after damaging her near-fore tendon early in the year.
