Feature Stakes – What’s The Story?

Listed Algoa Cup stays intact at R350 000

The two features that open the Highveld Spring Season on Saturday 5 October have both been subjected to stakes cuts.

The Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge and the fillies equivalent were run last season for R400 000 apiece but have both been reduced to R350 000.

The largely anticipated stakes cuts have already been noted in the upcoming Cape season features and appear to have caught some unawares – largely as the exact gravity of the rationalisation is yet to be communicated to industry stakeholders.

Oddly enough, the Listed Algoa Cup, to be run on the annual Fairview double-header weekend of 27 October, has maintained the 2018 stake level of R350 000. So that adds to the confusion.

The two Joburg spring season openers have attracted 52 entries between them, with last year’s F&M victress Cascapedia an entry in both races.
