Murtagh To Show Aussies How To Win Cup

Ebor winner Sonnyboyliston could be on road soon

Trainer Johnny Murtagh had plenty to say after his 4YO gelding Sonnyboyliston (Power-Miss Macnarama, by Dylan Thomas) won the Ebor this weekend.

“A few people have been looking at him for the Melbourne Cup,” Murtagh told racingpost.com.

“There have already been offers and a few deals were close, but I thought he would run well today so I was keen to keep him. The offers will have to be big now! I was an apprentice in Australia and really enjoyed my time there. I’m always slagging my Aussie friends, telling them I put them on the map with Choisir and Starspangledbanner. I would have loved to win the Melbourne Cup as a jockey, but I didn’t manage it. To go back and win it as a trainer would be really special. I would love to go down there and kick those Aussie butts!”

Sonnyboyliston has won five of his thirteen starts with most of his prizemoney coming from this weekend’s Ebor win.

He also won the Listed Martin Molony Stakes two starts ago.

Murtagh, a five-times Irish champion jockey has been training since 2013.
