Jockey Morne Winnaar Suspended

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that Jockey Morne Winnaar was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7, in that as the rider of DESERT RAT, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference and constitute a source of danger to a number of runners when he shifted in at about the 1500m mark in Race 7 at the Kenilworth Racecourse on 26 December 2010.

Mr Winnaar signed an Admission of Guilt and he has been suspended from riding in race meetings for a period of ten days from 9 January to 18 January 2011, both days inclusive.

Inquiry – Jockey Marthinus Byleveld

The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an inquiry held in Cape Town on 4 January 2011, Jockey Marthinus Byleveld was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7 in that as the rider of CHRYSALIS, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to LEGION OF HONOUR when he shifted outwards in the latter stages of Race 5 at the Kenilworth Racecourse on 26 December 2010.

Mr Byleveld pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Inquiry Board found Mr Byleveld guilty and imposed a suspension from riding in race meetings for a period of one week.

Mr Byleveld has the Right of Appeal against both the finding and the penalty.
