The 2016 National Yearling Sale Preview

Numbers Game

Everyone loves numbers.

Here are the ones that matter.

40

The 2016 National Sale is the 40th to be staged at the Germiston complex of the TBA.

Graduates have won over 400 Gr1 races. Here are some names that will ring a bell. Argonaut. Bold Tropic. Captain Al. Dynasty. Elusive Fort. Free My Heart. Goldmark. Harry’s Charm. Ingleside. James Jaguar. Kildonan. London News. Martial Eagle. National Emblem. On Her Toes. Pomodoro. Record Edge. Senor Santa. Taban. Unaware. Vercingetorix. Winter Solstice. Young Rake. Zebra Crossing.

And, yes, Gr1 Q and Gr1 X are still missing. Some help is at hand: Q is lot 89 Queen Of Alamo & lot 276 Quinlan. Perhaps for the 50 still unnamed yearlings X marks the spot…

7,500,000

Seven-and-a-half-million. That’s the number of Rand available per year as added stakes for black-type 2yo and 3yo races.

All horses bought and signed up at Bloodstock South Africa sales can qualify. There are no less than 75 opportunities each season to earn added stakes, from Gr1 right down to Listed races. This year’s National Sale buy-in is R5k.

28

The highest number of yearlings at the sale by an established stallion.

That is Avontuur’s sire Var, this season’s leading sire of 2yo’s. Second with 27 yearlings is Sail From Seattle, the former Ascot stallion (he’s dead) who got a Gr1 Cape Guineas winner in his first crop.

25

The highest number of yearlings at the sale by a first-season stallion.

That is Scott Bros’ new sire Crusade, who received massive support from KZN breeders. Second with 18 yearlings is Avontuur’s sire Oratorio, who is new to South Africa, but already produced Gr1 winners world-wide from previous liaisons.

150,000

The highest advertised fee at conception in 2013 of National Sale yearlings by a South African based sire.

That honour is shared by former champion sire Silvano and successor-in-waiting Dynasty. Silvano’s fee increased to R200k in 2015, while Dynasty’s rose to R250k. The duo have 37 yearlings on offer at Nationals.

4,458,944

The highest advertised fee at conception in 2013 of National Sale yearlings by a foreign based sire.

US$300k, or almost 4.5 million at last count for our embattled Rand, is the advertised fee for US champion sire Tapit. As always in the limelight in USA, the Gainesway-based Tapit in 2016 has leading 3yo Moyhamen, and also is the sire of UAE Derby winner Lani – both are Kentucky Derby candidates.

Tapit has one on offer – a yearling colt from a daughter of champion filly Ipi Tombe, consigned by Drakenstein.

5,000

The lowest advertised fee at conception in 2013 of National Sale yearlings by a South African based sire.

That stallion is former champion 2yo Kildonan, who has two colts on the sale. #14 is out of Bold Wonder, a Gr3 placed 7-time winning mare by Blackfriars (son of Danehill) from Bush Hill Stud. #79 is out of stakes winning Var-mare Esteral, from the family of UK sire Connaught, consigned by Clifton Stud.

166

The number of yearlings sired by the top-dozen stallions on the current sire-list.

The top-dozen are from the Sporting Post table of Leading Sires by Stakes as at 17 April, in this order, with their number of yearlings on offer.

9 Trippi
23 Silvano
17 Captain Al
21 Kahal
14 Dynasty
3 Western Winter
8 Jay Peg
– Jet Master
28 Var
10 Ideal World
24 Judpot
9 Mogok

170

The number of yearlings sired by 7 stallions with 20 or more yearlings on offer.

That’s 37% of the total 453 yearlings on offer.

315

The number of yearlings sired by 18 stallions with 10 or more yearlings on offer.

That’s 70% of the total 453 yearlings on offer.

53

Countdown At Nationals

Sires represented at the sale, with their number of yearling by sex, and their advertised fee at time of conception in 2013, and current fee as advertised in 2015.

44

The total number of vendors of yearlings at the sale.

30

The highest number of yearlings catalogued from a single vendor.

There are three vendors each with thirty yearlings catalogued – Klipdrif Stud, Moutonshoek and Varsfontein Stud. Hot on their heels with 29 is Mauritzfontein Stud, then come Ascot Stud (26) and Scott Bros (22). Between them, that’s a good third of the whole catalogue.

127

The difference in age in days between the oldest and the youngest yearling at the sale.

The oldest is #86 Grande Maestro, a colt by Oratorio out of multiple Gr1 runner-up Felix The Cat (who had the misfortune to be born in the same year as Princess Victoria). Born on 26 July, the colt is from the first local crop of his sire, and is the first foal of his dam who is half sister to MLJet. He’s consigned by Bush Hill Stud.

Four months younger is #373, a half brother to three winners out of Tara’s Tinker, who is half sister to Gr1 winner Act Of War and full sister to Gr3 Subastador. The yearling colt, born 1 December, is from the first local crop of AP Indy stallion Marchfield, and can be found in the Moutonshoek draft.

Not For Sissies

There’s a seasoned owner and breeder who is deeply into pedigree analysis. Every year, when the new stallions going to stud are announced, he delves into their genetic make-up. If he likes what he sees he’ll buy shares (if these are available). If he really likes it, he’ll make sure that he backs up his judgement by getting a suitable mare or two. Our man has had glorious successes that paid off big time – such as investing in a Silvano share, and Jet Master’s first crop of yearlings. He’s also had spectacular failures – their names best forgotten. For some others, the jury is still out. Never say die!

Mystery man

Mystery man

Three years ago his excitement knew no bounds with the arrival at stud of Crusade, whose pedigree supposedly has what it takes. The first hour of truth is nigh. Crusade has a large number of yearlings at Nationals, and buyers will no doubt give a no-nonsense evaluation of what they see in terms of potential. Thankfully, our man still has at least another year or so before he knows for sure.

Buyers have the unenviable task this year of prospecting about a hundred yearlings sired by ‘new stallions’, making up more than 20% of the whole catalogue for Nationals this year. Included in that number are yearlings by the likes of Oratorio and Marchfield, who aren’t strictly new, as they’ve had runners in other countries already. But even that is no guarantee that things will follow previously established patterns in a different environment.

Remember the relative, but baffling failure in Australia of one of the world’s best, Galileo.

New stallions certainly are not for sissies.

Sarah Whitelaw delves into the backgrounds of this year’s new releases.
